Nelson housing developments

There is a significant housing shortage and demand for housing in the Nelson region. There is also a shortage of land that can be developed and planning limitations. We are looking to increase the number of homes available in Nelson by replacing older homes with a greater number of new homes under our redevelopment programme. We are also purchasing completed homes from developers.

Note: the Nelson area includes, but is not limited to Stoke, Nelson Central, The Wood and Nelson South.

Tuia te Hapori – The new community space in Southeast Stoke

In February 2024, Tuia te Hapori, a new community space­, opened in southeast Stoke.

Tuia te Hapori, which means to ‘sew/bind the community’, is one of the initiatives that has come out of a multiagency group – including Kāinga Ora, Te Korowai Trust, Nelson City Council, Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, New Zealand Police, and the Department of Internal Affairs – that has collaborated to support the southeast Stoke community.

The purpose of Tuia te Hapori is to provide a safe space for the community to engage and connect with agencies, groups, or services available. Tuia te Hapori can be used by any agency or group to host activations, workshops, or events that are beneficial to this community.

Many groups completed a substantial amount of work to transform the empty Kāinga Ora site on the corner of Karaka / Orchard Streets into the community space, including funding from the Lottery Grants Board. Mitre10 MEGA Helping Hands, with the assistance of our local trades, also played a huge part in the delivery of this project.
