In Manuka Street construction is expected to start in late-April 2022 on fourteen new, warm homes.

The homes are being built on 7 to 13 Manuka Street. These are all large sections. By removing the four old (pre 1965) homes from these sections, we can provide 14 homes for whānau in need.  These include 10 two-bedroom homes, two three-bedroom and two four-bedroom homes.

It is expected that they will be completed by June 2023.

Three of the existing homes have been offered to Mana Whenua for removal. The fourth house was demolished. It contained large amounts of asbestos and was deemed unsuitable for removal.  The whānau that were living in these homes have all been successfully rehoused.

Māori-owned build partner Iconiq Construction has been contracted for the Manuka Street development. They run a pre-employment programme from their Gisborne facility for rangatahi (young people) who want to get into a trade, so this development provides valuable training opportunities for local young people.

Further redevelopment is being investigated in Manuka Street.

Another four public homes are being built in Elgin. Construction on the homes in Munro Street is well underway. It is expected they will be ready for whanau to move in from May 2022.

In Childers Road Elgin, construction is well underway on an 11 two-bedroom home development.

One way Kāinga Ora is addressing the urgent need for housing in Tairāwhiti, is by partnering with developers who build homes that meet Kāinga Ora specifications. The developer purchases the land and builds the homes, which Kāinga Ora then purchases once they are complete. This is what is happening with the development in Childers Road, Gisborne.

RND Projects is the developer building the 11 two-bedroom homes. Once complete, Kāinga Ora will purchase the homes for transitional housing. Transitional housing provides people and families with a safe place to live and wraparound support services while they are helped to find appropriate long-term accommodation.
