Local school children from East Gore School were invited along to watch Ryal Bush’s ‘dinosaur digger’ begin to deconstruct the club’s former home, the Longford Tavern.

The pupils also received a lesson in recycling with the Ryal Bush team explaining their waste minimisation approach, aiming to recover and re-use 96 percent of the materials on site.

Kāinga Ora purchased the 7,682m2 site at Hamilton Street in east Gore mid-last year.

Otago Southland Regional Director Kerrie Young says planning for the housing development on the site has continued to progress since the sale.

“It’s fantastic that we’re now at the demolition stage so we can get the site cleared and be one step closer to delivering new, warm and dry homes to Gore, on a special site that has been such a big part of the community for many years.

“Plans to build around 20 homes are currently being drawn up and applications for resource and building consents will be lodged in due course. We’re looking forward to being able to share more detailed plans for the homes with the community,” says Kerrie.
