As we move into the second phase of our regional housing programme, we have increased the number of cities and towns we're looking to build in. This is in line with the Government's plan to increase public housing supply across New Zealand, we’re expecting to deliver the new homes over the next four years.

The homes we're building

Our new homes will be modern, attractive and easy to maintain, accommodating both families and individuals. Most of the houses being constructed are one or two-bedroom, with some three and four-bedroom homes. They will be carpeted, insulated and double-glazed with thermal curtains. The homes will be sited on landscaped sections with private outdoor living areas, including parking.

All proposed buildings will be within the local Council’s district plan requirements and will take into consideration boundary lines and the orientation of the building to optimise sunlight. Where we are building homes on currently tenanted properties, we'll ensure adequate space between the properties.

If we need to remove an existing house to redevelop the site, we'll work closely with tenants to relocate them to other suitable homes, preferably in the area.

These will give you an idea on what the homes will have.

Shared boundary fencing

We may need to consider building a new fence with neighbouring properties. We will look at this on a case by case basis. If this applies to you a Housing New Zealand project manager will be in touch. If you’d like to know more read our page on fences.

Keeping disruptions to a minimum

Once we start building, we will ensure that site and traffic management plans are in place for these developments. These provide rules and health and safety guidelines for what happens during construction. The plans will cover the hours during which work can be carried out, where contractors can or can't park their vehicles and the control of dust and noise.

Where we’re building

Because this is a four-year programme and we are still at the initial stages of planning, some of our selected sistes may prove unsuitable for new housing and so may not proceed. We’ll keep tenants and neighbours informed with updated information on this page as we progress.

We have identified the regions below for development.

South Island

Other regions for later development

We are looking at the following regions as well but these developments won't start straight away and are subject to change as we work through the building programme.
